Information for Accepted Researchers
A $500 non-refundable admissions deposit is required to hold your place in the class. Your deposit must be received in the International Programs Office by the commitment date specified on your acceptance letter.
The Wake Forest University Center for Global Programs and Studies provides assistance with the visa process. You should read and make yourself familiar with the information found here: http://global.wfu.edu/iss/j1/. This page offers information on the requirements of visiting on the J-1 visa, including the guidelines for arriving and living in the US, J-2 dependent visas, and most importantly, the mandates of the visa regarding health insurance.
You will also be required to fill out a Certificate of Finances indicating that you have the funds necessary to cover tuition and living expenses for the length of your stay. This document requires an explanation of the sources of your funding and supporting documents and signatures from those sources.
In order for the University to process the forms necessary for the J-1 (visiting scholar) visa, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Deportment of State require that we ensure all potential exchange visitors have sufficient funding for their time of stay in the United States. The minimum amount required to prove sufficient funding is $2,500 USD a month for the duration of your stay.
While there is no formal Orientation, you are required to check-in with the Office of International Programs at least 3 business days before the start of classes. During this meeting you will be given important information needed to begin your participation in the program. You will also have a tour of the school and have a chance to ask any questions you may have. We ask that you call +1.336.758.6116 or email Tanya Madenyika at email@example.com in advance to schedule this appointment.
Please note the required Student Health & Immunization Form , which is due by July 1, 2017.
All students are REQUIRED to show a record that they have been given the immunizations listed on page 4 of the attached document. Students who do not have a record of these immunizations will not be allowed to begin classes.
You have several options:
- Take the attached form to your physician to fill out the appropriate dates you received each immunization and have them sign the form.
- Send your immunization records from a previous university or school as long as they are officially translated and signed.
- Send any officially translated record of immunizations from your physician or local health department. Please be sure to receive any vaccinations on the list that you do not yet have prior to traveling to the U.S..
Students who do not bring a record of the required vaccines, or who have not received such vaccines, will be required to obtain those shots at the Student Health Center prior to being allowed to begin classes.
All enrolled students must create a Student Blue account in order to request enrollment or waiver of the Student Health Insurance Program by August 1, 2017.
- Visit the webpage – www.bcbsnc.com/wfu (or https://studentblue.bcbsnc.com/wf/ if outside of the United States)
- Based on your election, you may choose – Enrollment > Enroll Now OR Waiver > Request A Waiver
- The next step is to create a Student Blue account as a NEW USER.
- Once the account is created, follow the prompts to complete the enrollment or application for waiver.
Detailed instructions on how to create this account can be found on the Student Health Insurance Program website. For more information about the health insurance requirements for international students, please follow this link: International Students Health Insurance Requirements. You can also email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have questions.
WFU Identification Card
Wake Forest requires all students to have a student ID card, called the Deacon One Card. Once you have your WFU username and password, please upload a photograph of yourself for the Deacon OneCard Office at http://go.wfu.edu/submitphoto. The photograph will be used for your student ID card (Deacon OneCard). Please use a color photo with clear shot of your face. Be sure that you are the only person in the photo and that you are not wearing a hat or sunglasses. You will receive your Deacon OneCard at orientation.
You should have received an email from university IT to set up your Wake Forest University username and email address. This will allow you to set up your university accounts such as your email and your student Deacon Electronic Account Center (DEAC) where you will pay your tuition and fees. If you failed to complete this set-up, please email email@example.com to have your information resent. We will begin using your wfu.edu email account exclusively for important information starting July 15, so it is important that you are using that address by then.
All students enrolled in the VIR program must have a laptop computer that meets the requirements described on this web page.
Tuition & Fee Payments
You will receive notice through your DEAC account when your tuition bill becomes available. We recommend that you check your account frequently to ensure that you know what to anticipate for all owed tuition and fees. Tuition and fee payments for fall 2017 will be due on August 1, 2017. For VIR tuition rates, please see our financial information list.
Housing & Parking
We encourage you to arrange for housing in Winston-Salem, NC as soon as possible. View the Housing Guide. Please also visit the housing web page. While housing is fairly inexpensive and readily available in Winston Salem, it is important to begin the search early in order to have a variety of options.
If you will be using a car while you are here and plan on driving to school, you must have a parking permit. Information on registration can be found here. There are limited number of parking spaces reserved for Law students and they tend to be claimed quickly, so you will need to be prepared.
